NSSBE (National Society of Steel BAND Educators)

In 2016, Dr. Chris Tanner, Prof. Tom Miller, and I founded a non-profit organization, NSSBE, to support the development of steel band directors in the United States. Since 2016, I have served on the Board of Directors, utilizing my skills with website development and editing and organizational finances.

Over the past seven years, NSSBE has grown to involve over 120 members. We hold an annual conference of professional development offerings for steel band directors. Additionally, the organization has developed a professional journal, edited by Dr. Eugene Novotney. Our website provides numerous articles, a video series, and lists of resources as well which add to impact of the organization within music education in the US.

Below is an example of the kind of work that NSSBE does. Dr. Dan Moore from the University of Iowa hosted our 2023 NSSBE conference at compiled the following video with a recording of Dut Dee by Mat Britain as the backdrop, Dut Dee was recorded by University of Iowa students along with attendees of the NSSBE conference as part of the opening session of the recording process. We could not be more grateful for Dr. Moore’s support of the organization.
